BioGENEius 2019


The Georgia BioGENEius Challenge is a competition for high school students who are doing outstanding research in biotechnology.

When is it?: The 2019 Georgia BioGENEius Challenge will take place on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the statewide Georgia Science and Engineering Fair (GSEF) in Athens, GA.  The GA BioGENEius judges will select to 1 winner and 1 alternate for the competition. 

What Do You Win?The winner of the Georgia competition will receive a travel award to compete as a finalist in the International BioGENEius Challenges with students from around the country at the BIO International Convention June 3-6, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA.

One (1) state finalist will be selected during special judging at GSEF, and winner and alternate of the local BioGENEius Challenge will be announced at the GSEF Awards Ceremony. The winner of the Georgia competition will receive a travel award (hotel, airfare, petty cash) to compete as a finalist in the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge with students from around the country at the BIO International Convention, June 3-6, 2019 in Philadelphia, PA.  You will have a chance to compete for cash prizes totaling $20,000.

NOTE: If you are selected as a winner please note that we cannot provide support of any kind to bring additional family members, friends etc. to the competition in Philly. Travel assistance is ONLY for the winner and their 1 chaperone. Additionally, activities at the BIO Convention are closed to additional attendees-no exceptions including young children.

Here are the steps to reach the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge:

  • Apply to the Georgia BioGENEius Challenge via the Biotechnology Institute – click here to set up an account and apply online. Entries must be completed by March 25, 2019. NOTE: Parent and Mentor Authorization Forms must also be completed prior to the deadline. These forms are sent to parent and mentor automatically after the student enters his/her information online.
  • Participate in the statewide Georgia Science and Engineering Fair (GSEF) on Friday, March 25, 2019 held in Athens, GA at the Classic Center. Students are selected by their regional/local science fairs to reach the state GSEF competition.*
  • If selected, you must be willing to attend the National BioGENEius Challenge in Philadelphia, PA from June 3- 6, 2019. Travel expenses will be paid for the winner and 1 chaperone. Family and friends are NOTpermitted entry to BioGENEius events in June, including the BIO Convention.

*If you are not competing at GSEF and are a GA student who would like to compete, please still apply and notify us that you are not competing at GSEF. We will work with you to arrange a space at the Classic Center to have our judges hear you present.
