The Georgia BioEd Institute is a division of Georgia Bio, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the state’s life science industry. The Institute’s mission is to strengthen Georgia’s life sciences workforce pipeline through classroom-to-career initiatives that align with industry needs.
We are building the capacity of Georgia classrooms to support the future life science workforce with teacher professional development in biotechnology, an equipment depot, a visiting scientist program, and the BioGENEius award for student biotechnology projects. The Institute provides training for current workforce needs (e.g., biotech courses for non-scientists and executive leadership training for future managers), and supports networking and mentoring for early career professionals through the Emerging Leaders Network.

GaBioEd brings industry and institutions of learning together to improve STEM education in Georgia and to make students aware of and prepared for career opportunities in the life sciences industry. Primary programming includes:

  • Teacher Trainings: The Biotechnology Teacher Training program provides hands-on training and support to high school teachers with the goal of gaining mastery in the instruction of biotechnology. GaBioEd uses its vast partner network in high schools, technical schools and industry to bring the relevance of the training topic, and opportunities in industry, back to their schools and classrooms.
  • Equipment Depot: The Georgia BioEd Institute Equipment Depot provides grades 6-12 teachers with the supplies and equipment they need to prepare students for careers in the life sciences. We accept donations from companies and universities, and get the supplies into the schools that desperately need it. Teachers who partake in the GaBioEd teacher training are priority recipients of equipment.
  • BioGENEius Competition: The annual Georgia BioGENEius Challenge recognizes outstanding high school science students in the region, advancing winners to compete in the National and International BioGENEius Challenges at the BIO International Convention.
  • Visiting Scientist: Georgia Bio matches scientists from local biotechnology and medtech companies with local biotechnology high school programs to share their experiences, scientific knowledge and information on how science is applied in their businesses.
  • STEM Voice: The STEM Voice™ Video Competition is nationwide opportunity for students in grades 5 - 12 to artistically explore the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Learn more here.

GaBioEd ensures that the workforce pipeline for the industry remains strong by conducting workforce analyses for the state of Georgia that highlight the industry’s most pressing hiring and talent needs. GaBioEd also hosts a Career Fair and online Career Center to help life sciences employers find critical talent, while connecting job seekers to career opportunities.

GaBioEd carries its local work to the national arena through the Coalition of State Bioscience Institutes (CSBI), a 42-state coalition of bioscience organizations that delivers industry-led education, workforce development and entrepreneurship programs through a national coordinated effort.  GaBioEd Executive Director sits on the CSBI Executive Committee.
